National Kids Count Award Winners!!!

On the 21st April the Behind No doors crew were invited to the Houses of Parliament to collect a prestigious national award. The crew received the Kids Count Inspiration Award for Best Contribution to Youth Issues. Presenting the awards were Olympic Gold Medalist Darren Campbell and Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet. In attendance were other award winners from across the country. The event was hosted by Kids Count founder Linda Lawrence and supported by Mike Penning MP, Theresa May MP, Patron Baroness Miller and several other members of parliament.

Launch Night...! Live and Direct!

After weeks of preparation and behind the scenes efforts Behind No Doors was ready to rush into the public eye!

Attended by a great mixture of workers, service users, young people, families, stakeholders, elected members and the Mayor the event was a huge success.

The BND crew displayed their canvasses, prints and posters along with formal information stands from the Howztalk Service. The centre piece of the exhibition hall was the Behind No Doors 'surfed-sofa' designed by Jim Cereal with help from the crew. The surfed-sofa, which featured in the film is adorned with stencils from the original canvass designs and was decorated with strewn newspaper articles featuring coverage of the project.

Next on the showlist it was into the auditorium for a presentation of V50 volunteering certificates and a Mayor's badge to each of the young people by the Mayor himself. Following this, the main event, the premiere screening of the film.

The film was excellently received and immediately sparked debate amongst the audience with the crew fielding questions about their experiences and the potential of their work. Commitments were made by stakeholders for taking the young people's work further in order to maximise the impact.

Inspired Youth firmly believe that the event should be a launchpad; rather than it being considered the end of a project it should be the start of a campaign. Here is where it begins...

Beacon Scheme Assessment Presentation

The Behind No Doors crew were invited to present their work at the Harrogate Borough Council's Beacon Scheme Assessment day, along with other major players, at Harrogate College.

Their work was well received by the assessors and its hoped that its impact will contribute to a favourable decision by the assessors in the future. It is a testimony to the quality of the young people's work that it was chosen by Alan Jenks, Head of Housing to be put before the assessors as an example of excellent practice.

Narrative Timelines

The crew used their individual narrative timelines as a platform from which to participate in interviews. The interviews were shot in the garden at Hyper (in the freezing cold)!

This was the first real experience of conducting interviews and delivered some excellent results. Getting hands-on with two professional cameras and sound equipment gave the crew vital experience to help us through the next three days of shooting.

Pre-Production Session 2

Today's session was our chance to spend some more time crunching through the pre-production process.

Time was spent completing the personal narrative timelines and from them developing short pieces of writing. These will be used later in the production stage.

The group then decided on what would be the best questions to ask each other in the interviews in order to draw out the best responses.

The group also discussed the options for interviewing other people within the community and from the short list we decided on a final shooting schedule.

The aims of the session were:

- Complete a personal narrative time line

- Communicate your personal narrative time line

- Construct and shoot an interview

The group were asked to respond to the following statement

Movement Arts with Nic Hobson

Nic moved the crew through their paces today with some interesting activities. The focus and commitment was fantastic as different elements of their individual experience were explored as a collective.

Firstly a series of freeze frames were created and played out in sequence to create the beginnings of a narrative. Then Nic encouraged the group to do some improvisation using some of the Blog content as a reference. Finally the various different elements were put together with a focus on performing to the film camera. The final performance revolved around the constant feature of a sofa at centre stage.

The results were really inspiring and quite moving to watch.

This gives us a great spring board into the film element for the rest of the week.

Pre-Production Session 1

Today the Behind No Doors project shifted gears and entered a new phase. Inspired Youth were really excited to welcome performance artist Nic Hobson to the project. Nic has a wealth of experience in performance and movement arts and we could think of no better person to help us move some of the collective experience of the group through a further creative process.

The aims of the session were:

- Begin to develop a personal narrative time line

- Identify key moments with freeze frames

- Use movement arts to express some of your experiences

The group were asked to respond to the following statement

"I can express key moments of my journey through performance arts"

In preparation for exploring collective and individual experience of the issue, the first task was for each person to create an individual narrative timeline. The timeline could include as much or as little information as people wished and could be presented in anyway they felt most comfortable with. The purpose of the timeline was to express the events, circumstances, decisions, problems, opportunities and states of mind, body and spirit that defined their experience being homeless. With this information we could best understand each person's individual experience in order to carry some of the substance into the film direction.

This session was all about viewing the designs that Gareth from Snowglobe Creative had created from the design briefs. We were really keen to hear the responses and feedback in order to finalise the poster outputs.

The aims of the session were:

- View outputs from Snowglobe

- Construct Interviews

- View examples of IY film projects

The group were asked to respond to the following statement

"I know how to prepare a professional brief for a graphic designer"

Having prepared the feedback for Gareth at Snowglobe, the group turned their attention to production week and the filming element.

For this part of the project the group will be working with award winning film maker and co-founder of Inspired Youth, Kevin Curran.

The first job is to begin looking at interview scenarios. Asking the right questions to the right people! The group looked at the list of suggested interviewees and added their own ideas. They then decided on what questions to ask in order that the answers gave the right material for the film.

Harrogate Housing Event

Three of the young people from the 'behind no doors' project went to Harrogate Housing Event where they shared work from their youth homeless awareness campaign. All three young people made a fantastic contribution to the event, sharing their knowledge and experience with professionals from the housing sector.

The way they represented themselves and their campaign project was outstanding and they clearly made an impact.

Some of the experience was captured on camera including an interview between the behind no doors crew and staff from a housing association.

Your work is already raising awareness and creating debate, and as Harley said "It's only half done!" This is a great sign and shows your campaign has great potential to make an outstanding impact in the community.

Nice work so far. Next job is the finalisation of the campaign poster designs, your ideas are awesome and we can't wait to show you the concepts realised.

Over the next two weeks we will be working with Snowglobe Creative to design and create some powerful campaign images using the raw photos taken last week.

We discussed all the themes of the campaign so far and talked about 'Flying Flags' and 'Distilling our Ideas'.

We then viewed, rated and selected the photos from the 6 photo shoots to go forward into a series of briefs for the designer.

wow! it was amazin i loved it!! my ideas were:- "the eye","miss homeless","lost". each shoot was so much fun, getting in to the zone and just having a laugh! i also took shots of amys shoot,jus 2 get feel for tha camera. Even though we were out in the cold i really enjoyed it.
Each picture is my view of being homeless. "the eye" is about looking into my eye and seeing my reflection and how i felt. "miss homeless" was me and emily being beauty queens with a dingey background to show its not all glamorous. "lost" was showing the state of mind of being homeless.
i cant wait to get all the pictures back next week :)

Respect to all the young people who made it down to the photography session last night, it was a massive success and you should all be proud. Nice work! You were engaged and passionate about what you were doing and hopefully went away inspired and hungry for more. The next stage you will be using your images to develop a powerful poster campaign. We cant wait to see them.

We are made up with the positive attitude you have all brought to the project and are happy to see the campaign shaping into a powerful combination of your experience, imagination and ability. The work you have produced so far really shows us how much you care about the issue and is expressed in a way that will engage young people.

We believe your campaign will challenge, educate and inform people about an issue that really matters. As the project gains pace we will be keen to see you continue to be at the heart of the project. Your voice will and already is making an impact.

Today we welcomed the mighty Jim Poyner to the Behind No Doors project.

After planning the photo concepts last week the group were ready to compose and shoot their ideas for real, over a range of locations and using the highest quality equipment.

Aims –

Turn a photo concept into a photo composition

Work with a professional photographer

Learn photography skills such as direction, capture and lighting

Jim took the original ideas for the shoots and added his expert professional knowledge and talents to help the crew capture their shots.

The results were outstanding!

this week we all put our thoughts into questions which we could ask member of the public or a someone who has experienced homelessness.
after we created our series of questions we paired up and then each took it in terms to ask and answer the questions, i paired up with emily. After i was filmed i asked never to be filmed answering those questions because it brought back some memories which werent good, but after i got over that, we then planned for doing a photo shoot for the posters.

Brainstorm: Creating Interview Questions

Documentary films are all about real life and observing people. Its about opening the door into someones life, who they are, how they live, what they think and the way they see the world. To make the observational film work documentaries use interviews with people talking to the director. It is the filmmakers job to create questions which open up the subject, that spark an interview into life and help the viewer to learn something new about the people in the film.

Tonight the group explored questions that they felt would create interesting reactions and help give viewers an insight into the subject of youth homelessness. They looked at questions for young people who had experienced homelessness and also questions they could ask members of the public.

They shortlisted 4 questions that they felt were the most relevant to ask young people who have experienced homelessness:

1. How did you become homeless?
2. Where did you turn?
3. How did you feel?
4. Describe 'a day in the life' of a young homeless person?

After the brainstorm the group got experience of composing and featuring in an interview on camera for real.

i have had a good day we made a canvas about time and money with are issues around it!i wanted to do this because when i was homeless this was a big problem for me so i wanted to make this into an image!
i am really please with what we have done
we also been thinking about where we are going to take some photos to raise the issue of waiting!!

Session 5 - Campaign Photography

In today's session we were making preparations for next week's photo shoot.

The Aims of today's session were:

last week we came up with some ideas for some art pieces we were going to do with Jim Cereal and today we made our ideas real!
i have done a piece that shows the vulnerability of young girls who are homeless i used a short sentence to describe it "Daddy do you recognise me now" and its pretty good!
i feeling great about the project now and my picture that i have done is amazing!
i may have to finish it next week but its all good!!

It looks amazin i think it will give a strong message as it is some1 lying down with: SHELTER BASIC HUMAN NEED wrote above it.... i think it says a lot even in few words because its tellin people that there are homeless people out there and that no matter what they have done or been through they deserve a roof over there head...

In this session, I spray painted my stencil that I created last time.
It was made up of 6 individual layers, using different colors.
At first Jim showed me what to do and then each cut out was added on top and then sprayed with color to get the outline of me and the dice.
The dice has theatre faces on it to capture the emotions of being homeless.
I decided not to use words on my canvas because I think it is effective enough and I feel that looking at my work from a distance you can capture the image and have a feel for what it is trying to say.
When people look at my canvas I don't want them to feel sorry for people that are homeless because some of us are actually stronger now than when we had the "perfect family life" but I do want them to feel remorse for taking certain things for granted.
I also want people to feel that in some ways life is a gamble,when referring to the dice because throwing the dice,it can either go the good way or the wrong way.
I have enjoyed today as I now have a real feel that I am been listened to as an individual and to see my work come together with the help of people like Jim, Cj and Kev has inspired me to approach with a stronger point of view.

i started being homeless wen i woz 16 i woz living on the streets and i woz asking my frends if i can sleep on thar sofa and than i went to the council and thay give me a place in ripon than i ask to go to the hostle at roberts st i woz there for 2 years than thay give me a flat in town and now i just spend my time with my frends and playing football
stay away from my old frends thet take drugs smoking weed and keep up with my rent and my bills try stay of trouble

my image was a guy lying down, this says 2 me that every body has the rite 2 a shelter so don't ban squatting... i chose 2 lye down because it says that homeless people don't have any were 2 sleep so they just basically lye down any where... the sessions so far have been really good and interesting...

The session we had with jim cereal was really good.we all created our own meaning of homelessness as an image.
My image to me,was from a female point of view because coming from my own experience it is an emotional time and i hid it quiet well as i felt like an outsider from everyone else who had their parents.
I had fun shooting the images because it put ideas in my head as to what is next for the project.
I also enjoyed the input that everyone had because we all had different views of homelessness and its good to see each of our ideas being created,and knowing that we are all going to make people realise just what "homeless" is.

For this session the Behind No Doors project welcomed professional artist Jim Cereal from the One Trick Pony collective.

The One Trick Pony crew have some major credits under their belt including MOBO, Lethal Bizzle and the award winning Arts Fusion project. They are also due to feature in a 3 page spread in an American Graf magazine next month!

Jim took us through his art history and influences before showing us examples of artwork and giving a demonstration with a stencil he had prepared.

The group then began to form some ideas for how they could use stencil art to create images which could generate discussion around youth homelessness.

The crew presented their ideas to Jim for feedback and to discuss ideas for developing individual pieces.

We've seen in this session how images can be used to generate discussion and debate around the issue of Youth Homelessness.

Next week we will be working with artist Jim Cereal from the One Trick Pony collective to create a series of original images which can be used to challenge, educate and ignite discussion around the issue in schools and other youth settings.

In preparation for this the group considered what kind of images are already associated with youth homelessness.

They created two mood boards using images from the internet and words generated by a visual thesaurus.

The first board featured popular stereotypes.

The second board featured the reality of youth homelessness.

Enabling the young people to visualize their views and experiences about homelessness is a key starting point in developing our powerful campaign to raise awareness. Each of the young people chose an image which represented an aspect of being homeless. They all spoke about their image to the group explaining why they chose the image and what it meant to them. This created a fascinating debate around the issue and gave us a shared understanding of youth homelessness. It created a sound starting point for our campaign journey and is fantastic insight into the feelings experienced by young people who have been homeless.

Amy: Visualization

1. Time

I chose this image because it represents how significant time became for me when I was homeless. Time is a huge issue when you are homeless. You always seem to be waiting. Waiting for an appointment, waiting for your benefits, waiting on lists. Even though you are trying to achieve things and move forward your time is not your own, you always seem to be waiting on someone or something in order to move on. When you are homeless time drags. When you have to wait on someone getting back to you its not easy because you have nowhere to go and nothing to do to kill time. Because of the stress of the situation you are in you feel down and are drawn into drugs or alcohol. Even when you want to spend the money constructively its difficult because it isn't enough to do the things you want, to help you move out of the situation.

2. Money

Money is the biggest issue when you become homeless. Its hard to know the best way to spend the very little bit of money you get, how to spend it right. It's really difficult when you are vulnerable and low not to spend money on drugs and alcohol because of your circumstances and the way you feel.

1. On Your Own

I chose this picture because it represents being alone. In my experience of homelessness I had many people trying to help me but I was the one living it. This was my journey and this image represents that you are on your own in the situation regardless of how many people are around you trying to help. It feels like people pitty you, but that doesn't change your circumstances. At the end of the day these people go home and you are left to return to your own journey. This image for me is about staying on the right track, having an aim and being strong enough to get through.

2. Focus

This image speaks about balance and staying steady. When you are homeless you have to take one step at a time. You feel like you could fall at any time. You have to keep focus and know where you want to get to so that you stay up. There are also other people sharing similar experiences but its like you don't see whats around you because you are concentrating so hard on keeping your balance. You have to believe you can get to the other side.

Lonely Island

I thought this image represented how I felt about being homeless. You feel like you are on an island, like you are an island. You are on your own to take care of yourself. It's an isolating experience, you feel detached from the world.

1. Leave me alone

This image for me is about reacting to having people stare and look down at you, who don't seem to care. Being homeless is hard and when people who don't know you judge you and don't take any time to ask why you are there or how you are doing it makes you feel defensive. This image expresses the feeling that a young homeless person can experience. If you really don't care and you don't want to find out who I am or how I feel, then go away. Leave me alone.

2. Stereotypes

I feel people base their ideas about youth homelessness with negative stereotypes. It is not right for people with no experience of homelessness to judge you in this way. They think you are lazy and can't be bothered to get a job, as if you have chosen to be there. It isolates you even more when you already feel excluded.

Shared Experiences

This represents many people in the same place. Although they are together they are more like individuals in the same space. When I became homeless I did not realize there was lots of other young people having similar experiences to me. It helped me, even though I didn't know them, that other people where in the same situation as me. Although it is never good for anyone to be homeless it was encouraging for me knowing other people were going through the same experiences.

1. Crime

This image made me think about crime. Being homeless has many issues connected to it and living as a young homeless person could possibly mean you could get involved in crime. Living in circumstances where you have very little to get by can lead to getting involved in crime to help you survive.

2. Drugs Misuse

This picture to me represents a bad trip. Homelessness can cause psychological problems and make you feel low and depressed. Drugs is an easy escape, people want to leave their feelings behind and step into a completely different world where their problems don't exist.

Hi I'm Seetal and i work for an organisation called North Yorkshire Youth as a youth volunteer advisor for V, which aims to get young people aged 16-25 into volunteering.

This media project is a fantastic way of making a difference and raising awareness of homelessness issues with young people. All the young people taking part in this project have come a really long way having been in the sitauations they have. Its only been 3 sessions but already i have heard some inspirational stories of how barriers have been overcome and the strength and passion that each individual possesses is pretty amazing.

All the young people are buzzing off this project and will be accredited for their hard work through the v Awards...

Hi im Bryony, im 17 im currently living in the ymca i have been for a year. Before i lived at the YMCA i spent most of my life moving in and out of hostels B&Bs, and between family members and moved out alone at the age of 16.Through the ymca i found out about an organsiation called EVS which gives you the chance to go abroad and work so i went to turkey for a month in feb 08 to work in a school with young people with disabilites and went to south america for 3weeks in jun08 to work in youth centres which was amazing!!!! I got a new job a week ago to be a young persons development worker for harrogate and district. In other words i give young people the chance to have their voices heard but there is alot more to it.

helloo im emily, as you may know. im currently a student at Rossett high sixth form studdying Health and social care, psychology and english language..but Re-taking maths cos lets say it isnt my strong point!!

im realy interested in working with the community such as children, and the elderly, as i work in a care home and my aim after sixth form is to go to uni and eventually become a primary school teacher
im interested in this project as many of my family friends have been made homeless in the past and my boyfriend had to live ruff for a week, i think its a subject that shouldnt be ignored and is one thas shuved under the carpet way too much by people that could do something about it xx

I live in harrogate and I'm a student at rossett sixth form.

I am studying Psychology and Health and social care like emily and like her boyfriend mine too spent a few months living on the streets!!

i too have been homeless and do not think that people should go through the same thing i did being a girl on the streets you get the wrong attention and people need to be alerted about that!!

I am doing this project because its really interesting and it would be great to see peoples experiences with the subject!!

I think its important because i have been through homelessness and i don't think young people should go through the same thing, its not an experience in my point of view that youths should go through.

As part of the first session we began to look at the issue of Youth Homelessness and the effects it can have on young people's lives. It is a complicated issue and is not usually as simple as just one thing that has gone wrong.

The group worked on a male and a female character. They drew the character outline on a piece of paper.

Outside the character they wrote down situations, influences, experiences and actions which they associated with youth homelessness.

Welcome to 'Behind no doors'

This is a project which aims to raise awareness of Youth Homelessness and the issues around it. Over the coming weeks we will be working with professional artists, photographers, designers and film-makers to explore and present the issue using high quality, high impact media.

We hope to make a difference on the issue both for young people within schools but also for other young people and the wider public.
